Disgruntled purple wrote:With Rogue question, she briefly point to Johan, who's still out for the count.

When she looks back at Rain, her face goes solemn. "I'm tired of fighting with everyone too. I want us to get along, but I don't see how. It seems like we, if not everyone here, keeps up this wall around themselves that's only torn down when we lose it. Like we're afraid that others will hurt us, so we have to be defensive at all times."

She looks down as well. "Rain, I'm gonna say something heavy... I don't think... I had a normal everyday conversation with anyone in this group. A simple dicussion about hobbies and interests, a gossip over a funny moment, or even just listening to someone gushing over their passion. It feels like all the words I share here with others are threats, commands, chewing out and getting chewed out. Even letting out all this is difficult for me, I probably would have kept it in if you didn't open up first."

She makes a small smile. "Thank you. I'm sorry for being so distant and obnoxious, I really need to stop venting my frustrations with everything at those that don't deserve it. And hey, maybe on the boat we can meet up to discuss things we like, I won't say it's the perfect cure to our problems but it's a start, right?"

"You're still better than my last group" Rogue shrugs.

Rain wrote:Her bow fades away into her palm, she takes her daughters hand and pulls her in, "I've never been so proud of anybody in my entire life." She whispers, wrapping her wings around Ursula, "Can you walk? Are you ok? He didn't hurt you did he? Im sure you feel like trash after that I can carry you back to town if you'd like? Im so glad your ok." Her words come out quickly, her concern clear within her voice. She squints at Ursula, "Can I have my eye back?"

Ursula slowly collapsed, tightly hugging and clinging to Rain. Pressing her head onto Rains shoulder, she broke into tears. Every emotion of grief, horror and relief just spilled out, she was so exhausted, she couldn't hold it in any longer.

Ursula just cried, hugging Rain so hard, it was as if she feared that if she'd let go for even a moment, Rain would disappear.

Very slowly, Kaylee woke up, as Twilight tried to lift her. Groggily looking at her friend, Kaylee only patted Twilight on the shoulder, letting her know she's okay and slowly sat up on the sandy beach. Very slowly, she sent her hand over her tired face. Her eye patch came loose, revealing her horribly scarred eye for a moment. She closed the eyelid, hiding the scar and slowly adjusted the eye patch to cover it once more.

"..what happened?" she quietly asked, looking around, then shifting her confused gaze up to Twilight.

".......leukocyte.. leukocyte..." Johan quietly whispered and opened his eyes. He remained laying on his back in the sand, staring up at the sky in thought: "...leukocyte-.. leukocyte..." he slowly said to himself once more.

Ursula calmed down very slowly. As the conversation went on, she remained quiet, still tightly clutching to Rain. Only after a natural pause in the conversation, she finally let Rain go. Her eyes were completely bloodshot when she spoke:

"Thank you.." she looked Rain in the eyes, then looked at everyone around her in turn and smiled: "Thank you, everyone" she gingerly looked down with a small smile still on her lips:

"If you weren't here.. I... I couldn't have done this alone... saving Rain.. and... bringing peace to my mother.. I'm sure she.. rests peacefully now, knowing the one who took her life, was brought to justice.. and I'm now safe, and surrounded by family and friends who look out for me...

I think... she's at peace now... and, I am too. I think this may have been.. the closure I needed."

She looked up at you at smiled, through the tears that started to appear in her eyes again:

"Thank you... I think, I can finally leave my old home behind with no regret... because of what you all did for me.."

She looked at Rain, wiping the tears from her eyes and smiled: "..I'm alright now.. uninjured...
I think Kaylee has your metal eye"

Rogue wrote:"We'll need to see if there's some way of strengthening or reinforcing it, it'd be a pain if we have to keep on reforging it after every battle. We have proved that the basic concept works however, and for that reason alone this has been a useful testbed."
Rain wrote:She looks to everyone, "I think im going to have my weapon reforged if possible. Become your guys's "tank" so to speak. I seen how powerful that can be and I love the idea of taking a hit from someone say... uhhh... Alder, and just shrugging it off much like that shield guy did back when we fought.

"We should consult the blacksmith again, he will be traveling with us at the caravan" Ursula quietly said and looked at you:
"We'll have a lot of time on our hands, the journey to the mainland will be a long one"

"..about.. our roles during combat" Johan quietly said and slowly sat up, absentmindedly trying to straighten his hair:
"I can fulfill any role you assign, I'll be distributing my stats more or less equally.
But.. if possible.. I'd like to keep a Healing spell.. its... important to me... Important for me to have it... on a personal level... you understand what I mean right?.." he looked down.

Kaylee nodded, listening to everyone: "..I have 20 Mana so far, I'll be providing magic support for a wide variety of situations, to keep our group flexible during combat."

"Mmm" Ursula nodded: "I'll be the heavy hitter for the time being. If you need a -20 HP spell thrown, I'll make it happen.
Oh. That reminds me" she slowly looked around the waterfall at the scattering ashes of the fallen parasites.

A very faint, ghostly red light, could be seen emanating in waves from the ashes and slowly flowing into your bodies.

(Your parasite has consumed the souls of the fallen and accumulated a very significant boost of power)

(You gained 6 new Points to distribute among your stats)

Your current stats are as follows:

"

As Rain lifted Ursula into her arms, Ursula began sheepishly wiggling and turning bright red:
"M-Mooooom! What are you doing? D-don't ask me stuff like that in public!" Ursula covered her face with both hands, shortly before turning red as a tomato:

"Oh my god, this is so embarrassing.. P-put me down! I can walk on my own... D-don't walk into the village carrying me! All my peers are gonna see me.."

As you examine Ursula's armor, you spot a few dents in the torso plate. Ursula herself looked really tired but otherwise unharmed.

"..the other Witchers can probably help us with healing once we reach the convoy" Johan waved: "Come on, they were getting ready to move when we left. The Parasite Warning flare could have accelerated their departure. Lets hurry so we won't miss them"

Several minutes later, when you emerged out of the tree line, a snowy plane came into view.
The village of Beauclair, sat quietly to your right, surrounded by its tall wooden fence. Its front gates closed and barred from the outside. Snow lazily fell from the sky, quietly coating the villages rooftops in brilliant teal covers. No lights burned in the windows and no sounds came from inside.

The village was left alone, quiet and peaceful, seemingly returned to nature, from which it was built.

The convoy stood on a well trodden path, that began at the edge of the village and stretched far into the flat, snowy planes in the horizon. Well over 20 carts and wagons stood in sight, connected to giant harnessed, blue foxes.
The foxes continuously scanned the landscape with all four of their blood red eyes and wearily scratched the snow. They didn't howl or emit any sounds, their ears darted left and right, like radar dishes, scanning the area.

The civilians were already sitting inside the convoy, packed closely together with their meager belongings, road provisions and Witcher combat gear. Roughly 15 Witchers stood in a wide rectangular perimeter around the convoy. All had their burning blades out and scanned the area with a nasty scowl. Some even stood atop very intimidating looking pentagrams that sometimes took a good 5 meters in diameter.

As you emerged from the forest line, several of them jerked their head in your direction, raising their blades in your direction. A few seconds later they slowly lowered their guard. The Warning Flare must have made them jumpy.

One of them, the oldest looking one, impatiently waved you to get on the wagons and said something in Nifel. The other Witchers in the perimeter began slowly climbing atop the wagons as well, others hopped on a few giant foxes that weren't harnessed to wagons.

"Everyone in this region is already here" Ursula quietly said, looking at the snowy flats in the distance:
"Every sentient animal, spirit and human. Everyone we could reach. This convoy is just one of many on this island.

We will begin moving east, towards a port town on the Strait of Rivas. Once there, we will link up with every other convoy on the Ashra island and proceed to board the Royal Transport Fleet. It will be waiting for us in port, take us off the island of Ashra, across the strait and onto the mainland.

Once we finally reach the main continent, we will continue east, towards the First City of Nifelheim - Rakshata. Once but a small village of the exiled survivors, it now stands as a mighty Castle Town, with its own Teleportation Pillar and its own parasite repelling Obelisks.

As Witchers, our job is to escort our civilian convoy there, so they may migrate to the Machine World.
But its also imperative that we meet the Witcher King of Rakshata, so you can relay everything you told me, about the Machine World.

The Witcher Kings must know. They have to know that your world isn't at war with Nifelheim.
And that our parasite repelling Obelisks aren't good enough.

Initially we erected the Obelisks precisely to safeguard the Castle Towns from the parasites telepathic influence. And by extension, safeguard the Teleportation Pillars and the Machine World, from the parasites influence.

The parasites have an eerie ability, to influence the unguarded minds of humans and drive them to violence and madness. Mental breakdowns, you called them. The parasites can project this influence over massive, long distances.

Humans who are subjected to this, may blindly lash out, harming and killing anyone in their sight. Their families, their loved ones, their friends.
Witchers have a way to combat this, but normal people have no chance.

To safeguard our civilians.. and the Machine World, we built the repelling Obelisks around our Castle Towns, around our Teleportation Pillars.
Once inside such a castle town, our civilians never showed any sign of mental breakdowns. We were convinced that our Obelisks worked. And by extension, that your world was safe from the parasites violent influence as well.

But... from what you told me... somehow, the parasites influence seeps through our Teleportation Pillars, into your world, affecting your people, causing them to go mad.

I don't know why this happens. Perhaps, our Obelisks don't fully neutralize the parasite influence, only reduce it. Perhaps after hundreds of years on this planet, our civilians grew a limited, natural resistance to it. So when a small amount of parasite influence sneaks into our Castle Towns, we aren't affected, but the Machine World is.

The Kings of Rakshata have to know. They have to do something, to stop the mental breakdowns in the Machine World. People must be dying on your planet, even as we speak. We have to make it stop."

As you watched the convoy, you spotted Tim Lemeshev, the Nifelheims Archeologist Extraordinaire, sitting in one of the more empty carts and excitedly waving to you. It seems he was saving you a spot.

"Come on" Johan said, climbing aboard and extending his hand to Kaylee, she was visibly struggling with her prosthetic leg.

"Before we depart-" Ursula began: "We must take care of one last thing.
The road to port town will take roughly 2 weeks, if we're lucky. We should take advantage of this time to hone our skills. After all, we'll spend a lot of time on the road, riding in this cart, or camping out at night.

Like before, we have three things we can focus on.

Martial Arts - This will help you in combat. You'll be able to avoid and land hits more easily. Your spells will become more accurate and precise as well.

Nifelheim Language - you guys are getting notably better, but there's much more to learn. Me or Tim may not always be next to you and if a complex, diplomatic conversation will take place, you'll have to raise your knowledge of Nifelheim to avoid any... unwanted miscommunications.

Theory of Magic - One must learn this to raise his Magical Category. Your current Category is ranked as 1. If you raise it to rank 2, you'll be able to cast Level 2 Spells, provided you have enough Mana. This is a vital skill for mages."

Ursula looked at you:
"As before, its best to focus on one thing at a time, to maximize the learning process.

I recommend spending 1 week studying one skill, then the 2nd week studying something else.
Or you can spend both weeks studying the same skill, to really max out its learning process.

So, what would you like to study during the trip? Me, Tim and maybe even a few veteran Witchers will help" Ursula smiled.

Alyx emitted a long, thinking sound: ".....mmmm.... Twilight, you currently have 20 Mana.
That's enough to cast a Level 2 Spell, in theory.
All you need is the theoretical know how.
May I recommend spending both weeks on studying the Theory of Magic? Two weeks is precisely what's needed to raise from Magic Category 1, to Category 2.
It may best suit our talents, but I leave the choice up to you.
"

Rolo thought for a moment, then said: "Our stats are fairly even, pretty versatile but not enough to cast a Level 2 spell yet.
Perhaps we could spend one week on one skill, and the other week on another. Perhaps Martial Arts could be one? We'll be fighting a lot, it will help us land our hits better.
"

Echo grunted in Radiance's mind: "That hack Carvos was really dancing around us in that last fight, like we were moving in slow motion. The difference between the Martial Art skills was too high.
Also, we never really synchronized our souls, which means your performing below your usual skill peak.
If you're raising your Health for a good front line fight, I recommend spending both weeks studying Martial Arts hard. It will help us synchronize our souls, help you regain the skills you lost, and prevent hacks like Carvos from avoiding our attacks so easily"
"

Squiggles chewed on his lower lip for a bit:
"Mmmm... lets see.. we don't have enough Mana to cast a Level 2 spell, but we have a whole bunch of Health. Perhaps we should go for the Martial Art skill for both weeks, help us synchronize our souls and get back to your skill peak.
Or maybe... Martial Arts for one week and something else for the second one?

Before they leave Rain collects her gear, checking her revolvers cylinder and making sure it still works, she gets her eye from Kaylee during the walk and with some struggle manages to get it reconnected and put back in. She takes a quick glance around at the other witchers and gives them a nod. "Mmm its a toss up but our survival comes first, im thinking martial arts, im done taking the higher levels trash and i'd like to smack some parasites around. Language can come later, soren isn't the main language but at least we have enough of an idea of the Nifel language to get the jist of whatever mission we are given. Ursula is a fantastic translator and should we not understand something we can just ask her. Martial arts,

"I'd go for Martial Arts and Language then" Rogue nods, "Finding it easier to talk to people will make it easier to resolve conflicts peacefully, and it'll help make our case to the Witcher Kings if it's in their own speech."

"Agreed in principle, but as we've already covered, we don't currently have a way to communicate with the folks back home" Rogue reminds Twilight, "And if we wait until the migration, then we won't have any time to warn our governments before the refugees start flowing in, quite a pickle we're in...

Come to think of it, Lucretia was able to talk to us whilst we were in our comas, and she was in this universe. How did she manage that?"

"That's why we need to use what we have." She puts forward. "We already got a way back, the towers. And I know of the time difference, hence why we have the impossible time limit of 5 minutes or less to make the whole world hold their fire before they slaughter half a planet worth of refugees in, what's actually a valid argument, protecting the ground of the Union from a hostile invasion."

She narrows her eyes. "Five years here is one day on Eath. In the time we prepare a succesful evacuation operation in Nifel, we can't even take a piss back there. The whole operation of building the towers took 25 years per piece. In total, that took over 2 centuries. But we? We just experienced a MONTH in that same time. So no matter how much everyone changes here, how all of the witcher population develops into a race of peace, NONE of that matters since Earth will still be filled with the same people as before, with the same mindsets we had so long ago."

Her gaze is still hard, but her eyes open more. "That's why it's important to let someone run in there to halt Earth's fire. Just one minute should be enough. And yes, that is still several days here. Hence why we need to hurry up with sending someone through there."

She looks around. "So, what other ideas do we have to offer? Because if we only have my idea to work with, I'm not a happy camper."

"Actually, I don't think a minute will be enough. If we do send through someone ahead of the migration, they would have to exit in our world at one of the pillars, and they were all in isolated locations surrounded by permanent stormclouds, so radio reception would be poor at best if not non-existent" Rogiue points out,

"Plus, even if we could get through to anyone, before you could talk to the peeps in charge, you'd have to navigate your way through the red tape of answering machines and secretaries, you can't just patch straight through to a president.

And sadly, they might not even take us seriously if we do reach them. Think what our tale will sound like? The descendants of a lost city, thrown into another dimension where time travels faster so they've experience thousands of years in days, and parasitic organisms can give them magic powers, are now just about to return en masse, armed with flaming swords. They'd call us crazy."

"Then lets get the refugees and Witchers involved. We write up a document quickly explaining what is happening and get signatures from as many locals here as we can. Even better if we can get one from the Witcher King.

We top it off by sending one of us and someone from here who is willing. That many signatures plus the testimony of two people I think gives us our best chance. The magic problem could easily be proven as long as the person who goes back isn't a unicorn"

Radiance scratches at his beard a moment

"This would be a lot easier if we could just set up direct communication through the portal. Some form of inter dimensional wifi signal"

Rain looks to radiance, "My sister is researching the pillars as we speak. Mind you it may take a while but should we find a way to make the pillars... think of all the possibilitys, this means alternate universes are real and we can explore these places." She smiles, "its amazing. Imagine. A unified multiverse!" She clears her throat, "anyway my sister is set up and researching the pillars, if one of us is to go back should that even be possible right now you can meet with her and then imform our home that these are refugees... not enemys and we can get that one witcher we fought out and back home."

Disgruntled purple

"Actually, that is a solid option." Twilight ponders. "Firewing would probably be keeping an eye on any activities from that tower personally. If she sees us pass through even she will hesitate. If some people pass through earlier to show what the situation is beyond, there's no doubt she's going to force her own choice on everyone. That might be the fastest way, given our extreme lack of time. Yes, this could actually work." She let out a small smile.

"Sounds like my sister." Rain chuckles, "Fires always been her way or the highway. Knowing her she sees the pillars as a powerful opportunity." We give her any sort of lead shes going to take it."

Kaylee thought for a moment, rubbing her scarred eye through the eyepatch:

"...When we left for Nifelheim.. Councilor Mercer saw us off. She knows we came here, which means she likely notified
the rest of the Union Council.

What's more, I know for a fact that every teleportation pillar is being watched, by a human scout team.
No electronics, the pillars storm distorts those. There's an actual field team sitting on a safe distance
watching the pillars with binoculars 24/7.

They take shifts, but every pillar is always watched.

If a scout team saw one of us emerge from the pillar and throw, lets say, a backpack on the ground, then
vanish inside the tower again... I'm almost convinced the scout team will move in to pick up the packpack and see what
we left for them inside.

That's where we put our documents, our status report.

I don't know if they'll believe us but... hopefully they'll at least send the report up the chain of command, until it reaches
the Union Council... once Mercer and Firewing hear of it, they'll probably back up our claims.. no matter how insane we come off.

I think its the safest option. Staying too long on Earth may bring about problems we can't even imagine.
I still don't fully understand how the pillars work" she said, then after a moment, looked at Ursula.

Ursula bit her lower lip: "From what I know, direct communication with the Machine World is impossible.
Although... according to our historical records, the Machine Folk did have some way of communicating with us,
using only their voice... without actually visiting Nifelheim.

The story goes that when our people were exiled to this planet, we begged the Machine Folk to let us return,
as the paraside horde stirred and began butchering us.
But the Machine Folk told us that we will never go back. They said so, with their voice... somehow... without coming here...
Then they cut off the conversation from their end and we never heard from them again...

We could never reach them either, no matter how many times we tried speaking to them.
The Machine Folk were silent. They left us here to die."

Ursula grimly looked up at you: "..I don't know how my ansectors communicated with the Machine World, all we have left
are hand written witness accounts, of something that happened over a thousand years ago.
Most are stored in the grand library of Lieselotte.

As of today, we don't know of any way to directly communicate with the Machine World.
Apart from physically going there"

Ursula went quiet and began listening to the conversation. At some point, she twitched. Her face turning into a scowl:

"...wait... what did you just say... about Lucretia?"

"She's one of the Precursors! Look! We even have her portrait!" Tim excitedly said and pulled off a heavy cloth from
a stone tablet that sat next to him in the wagon. The fading likeness of Lucretia came into view.

Ursula frowned at her. Tim didn't seem to notice and continued on with excitement: "So, you're saying Lucretia could
telepathically communicate with you, while you were asleep and in another world? Fascinating! I didn't know Precursors
possessed such an ability!" Tim said and began beaming again.

Ursula continued to frown: "...so this.. Lucretia just.. invaded your minds.. and you let her?"

Johan uncomfortably shifted in his seat: "..is it.. such a.. bad occurance?"

Ursula sighed: "Most creatures on Nifelheim are capable of telepathic communication. The.. cat spirits.. the foxes..
But they don't go invading your minds, because they have no business wandering around in there.
Doing so is considered extremely rude.

Such telepathic communication is only conducted between family members, only with permission and only in very close relationships.

What the hell was this Lucretia doing, talking to you in your mind, while you were in the Machine World?" Ursula asked, frowning.

"Uhh... well.." Tim began nervously rubbing his hands together: "I don't know about that topic, but we did find her diary of sorts..
In it, she said she was going to combat the Parasites using something called 'A Dark Machine'.
She made it sound like a big deal, something very effective.
Have you ever heard of such a thing, Ursula?"

"No" Ursula said in a deadpan: "If this Lucretia person shows up in your mind again, tell her to beat it.
She has no right messing around in there"

"With all due respect, Lucretia was the first answer we had after the world started going collectively mad." Radiance interjects "Our meeting also didn't seem to be an invasion of the mind but warning for the safety of Earth, which by extensions is also a warning for the safety of Nifelheim and her people.

By luck, coincidence, or a group curse those of us within that vision also had children or someone very close taken from us. But fucked up shit always either draws us together or happens when we all gather."

He pauses a brief moment exhaling. Appearing to try and calm some inner turmoil but to no effect as he continued.

"But I don't think we have to worry about her showing up again. The conversation was that of finality and someone dying. And unlike the glysteria living in us she wasn't a selfish cunt"

Ursula looked down with sorrow: "I'm sorry.." she said and went quiet.

Johan looked at her with concern and slowly spoke up: "...have you.. shared a.. special connection like that, with someone?.. its just.. the way you spoke about it, it felt that you hold such telepathic bonds very sacred..
Is that why you became so upset? That Lucretia disregarded that sanctity?.."

Ursula didn't answer. Her expression became miserable for a brief moment and she looked at the floor.

Tim covered his mouth in surprise and very quietly whispered:
"..oh my god, Ursula had an alien boyfriend?"

Ursula must have heard him, she suddenly jolted, scowled and turned bright red:
"N-none of your b-!... Shut up! I'm not talking about this anymore.." she crossed her arms and turned away. Her face remained bright red.

The wagons slightly rocked from side to side and began to move. Slowly but steadily, the village of Beauclair began to grow smaller on the horizon, as the rare snowflakes lazily danced in the wind.

Rain sits back with a sigh, taking in the cold air, reminding her of home. She crosses her arms and gazes at the road behind them. Taking the short moment they have to relax.

"What's the deal with this Lucretia person anyway, both you Witchers and our Glystaria symbiotes seem to have some beef with her, so what's the sitch?" Rogue asks Ursula.

"She also mentioned a way of saving our two worlds, which requires us to go to some cave we saw in the dream" Rogue adds, "Rolo thinks he knows where it is, so down the line we could pop in and have a gander."
