Radiance wrote:"Please don't call my child an excuse," Radiance's voice has a hint of menace but vanishes before anyone can take full notice "you're not wrong that we came here out of nowhere and fucked up royally.

I am very sorry for Rogue and his stupid mouth, my self for accusing you of being some mind reading monster, and the rest of us for acquiring tunnel vision to our want...or need...to find answers."

"Don't be rude" Ursula narrowed her eyes at Radiance.

Circi wrote:She quickly and forcefully pulls her against her chest, her lips closing on her ear, she whispers through gritted teeth, "You owe me." She lets go of Ursula and takes a step back,

Ursula released a sheepish, uneasy smile: "... right.. of course" she took hold of her elbow and took a step back.

Rain wrote:Ursula dear, I don't believe I have flare equipped we should Fire a parasite flare to get teams scouting the woods for "The story teller" can we nickname him so I don't have to say his entire name? It's really hard to say honestly."

"He would be called 'The Treasurer' in your language" Ursula nodded: "Its a direct translation of his name.

The Treasurer, Collector of Stories..." she released a grim smirk: "No.. perhaps, 'Collector of Souls' would be more accurate in your language.

The words 'Story' and 'Soul' are synonymous in the Nifel language, after all. The two words seem to have a very distinct difference in the Machine language though"

She raised her hand and discharged a red flare out of her palm. The red ball of light rose high above the tree line and exploded into a transparent red skull that opened its jaw and began hovering high over the forest.

"..if the local Witcher's deduce that the Treasurer is hanging around these parts, they'll likely steer away from this area, and divert the civilian traffic away.

Everyone who ever tried fighting him.. died.. or barely escaped with their life"

Twilight wrote:"... He's been trailing us. I don't know about you, but I have the nasty feeling he knows exactly where we are for some reason. He knows our goal, our path, our destination... If we meet up with the caravan now, there's no way he'll let them live. He has, after all, a reputation to uphold. And the idea he's afraid of a dead woman is not something he wants known."

"If we don't rondevu with the caravan, he might attack it anyway, just to flush us out of hiding" Ursula sighed:

"Its a loose - loose scenario. No matter where we go, they'll be in danger.
The only place where everyone can hide from the Treasurer, is behind the walls of a Castle Town. Maybe that's why the convoy commander decided to take the fastest route through the swamps.

I believe we need to make sure the convoy reaches it safely."

"Don't apologise for me, Radiance. Everything I did and said back there was intentional, albeit as I just said, I didn't expect such an extreme reaction from him, so for the loss of your home, Circi, I'm sorry." Rogue pipes up,

"Still, we can consider this a strategic victory, if you think about what we now know, compared with what we knew before. Kaznechey has revealed his hand, that he's after the Dark Machine too, and as I've said before, I like to know who I'm up against. Now we do, and now that we know he's going after it, we can expect to see him again in the future, and prepare for that accordingly.

Kaznachey's no fool. When he asked us our reason for exploring the tombs, we couldn't've just handwaved it as curiosity. We had to at least meet his suspicions, and that meant confirming we knew of the Dark Machine.

As for Lucretia's namedrop, well that was a test. We know how our symbiotes react to us mentioning her, so I wanted to know how Kaznachey'd take it. He was genuinely scared, much more than I expected, and that's valuable.

So call me stupid if you will, but we're now in a much better position that we were before, and for that I'm not apologising."

"Rogue" Rolo quietly called: "I believe there was a slight miscalculation.
If we distribute our points like so:

Health(+2)
Sanity(+2)
Mana(+2)

The end result will be:

Health: 24

Should we distribute our points like so?"
Rolo asked.

"Sure, sorry about that. Maths was never my strong point."

"Cant argue with the results but your method was very dangerous. Just a bit less hammer and a touch more scalple if you get my meaning." Radiance furrows his brow a moment "But that does raise a question. Did any of the fights with Kaznachey involve him on the defensive or were all the fights from him attacking?"

Ursula looked at the ground, frowning: "...if the Treasurer wants the Dark Machine, then so do we.
We can't afford it falling into the wrong hands."

"But we ran into a dead end on that lead" Johan quietly called.

"I know" Ursula shook her head in exhaustion: "Look, we can't stay here. The Treasurer made himself scarce and so should we. This explosion might've drawn a lot of unwanted attention.
We need to decide where we're heading out and we need to get moving fast"

She looked at Radiance, listening to his question: "Sure, uh.. both, probably. The Treasurer has been tormenting humanity for millennia, ever since we set foot on this planet.
We tried to kill him, he tried to kill us. It is the reality of Nifelheim. Every day on this planet we fight against extinction"

"Put me down for magic this go around" Radiance answers "and I agree that rejoing with the caravan would put more people at risk. This is going to sound weird but I suggest we take a slower path to where the caravan is headed and hunt glyateria along the way.

We gain three things with this. Number one and most simple being more skill points which would make us more of an asset for the Witchers as a whole, second being we take down any potential spys or informants Kaznachey has; and third we may discover more clues about the hostile Earth forces and or the Dark Machine"

Ursula chewed on her tongue for a few moments, thinking. Then shifted in place and said:

"...I don't think Kaznachey will go after the convoy... or us for that matter.

He's proud, yes, but he's also smart. He survived countless assassination attempts over the thousands of years that he lived on this planet. I don't believe he would let his pride get in the way of survival."

She collected her hands, nervously tapping her fingertips: "As much as I don't want to say it out loud, at this time, we are not a threat to Kaznachey. Neither is the convoy.
Its basically a large group of civilians, not an army.

Neither threatens his survival. He has no tangible reason to fear us.

Lucretia however... and the Dark Machine... them he fears. Instead of chasing us down just to satisfy his ego, it would be much more productive for him, to go after Lucretia immediately and assassinate her."

"But.. she's dead.." Kaylee said, unsure.

"We know that. Does he?" Ursula asked sighing: "There's no reason for him to fear a dead woman. He seemed to know much more about Lucretia and the Dark Machine than we do.
That's why, I believe he will go after them directly, without wasting any more time"

"Does he know where to look for them though?" Johan asked.

"Lucretia? Maybe... The Dark Machine? Probably not, otherwise he wouldn't be dogging us" Ursula said:
"Lucretia passed away, its a dead end. He doesn't know that, so let him waste his time hunting her down.

We on the other hand, need to reach a Castle Town asap. We have a memory orb from one of the invasions, a memory of the Dark Machine that probably no one has ever seen.
We need to get it to one of our Memory Libraries, to have one of the scholars look at it. Maybe they'll notice something we didn't, help us deduce a way to trace the Dark Machine after it left the tomb."

Ursula sighed: "Thus, I believe our optimal course of action is to reach Rakshata Castle asap, link back with our convoy along the way and escort them there. I don't believe Kaznachey will be hunting us, if he perceives Lucretia as a more immediate threat.

I understand the reasons behind leaving the convoy and heading up north, but we don't know the exact location of the hostile Earth forces, or how to identify Kaznachey's spies. We might end up stumbling in the dark and wasting our time, without finding anything.

And with Kaznachey chasing down a dead end, we have a chance to get ahead of him in our own investigation.
We shouldn't waste this opportunity. I believe we need to link up with the convoy and head straight for Rakshata"

"Ursula owes me a new life and it appears that I am now caught up in your little tangle if webs as ironic as that sounds." She looks to Rogue, "It is apparent to me that I don't have many other options. I could travel to the nearest sinner community, unfortunately that would be more then a weeks travel on foot. Plus taking on the roads alone isn't entirely in my best interest. Rogue witchers are much more fierce and much less filling when it comes to hunting and Glystaria, well..." She scratches the back of her head, "...with the tide moving closer, and the ocean of parasites ever growing I fear that I won't be just fighting 1 at a time. I'm sure it would be a rarity to see even a team of 2 without extra support on the side. At this impass it's almost obvious what my final option is." She waves forward, "I think it is imparitive that we begin walking in the direction of this 'Convoy' you keep talking about."

Rain gives Circi an uncomfortable look, "Any plan at this point is a good one." She shrugs.

"Let's go already then, the more time we waste with discussions and "what we owe", the bigger the chance is all our actions will be for naught. We head to the city, at any cost, the knowledge we have must survive."

"Just East of us, we should be able to catch up to them within a week or so" Ursula said, then uneasily looked at Twilight:
"I'm sorry, I wish I could come up with a better way to.. you know.. I don't know.. decide together on a course of action. I do value your opinion"

Ursula shifted in place a bit, then seemed to remember something:

"Oh, right, Twilight, let me know which skill you want to train during the journey.
Let's move out everyone" she waved you to follow and set a brisk pace along the snow covered trees.

As you rapidly moved further and further away from the crater behind you, the aftermath of its appearance still haunted you for long hours after. Small aftershocks underground still reverberated under the earth. You passed spots in the forest where the plant life and trees had dissolved, turning into a dark, unrecognizable crystallized mass, wherever the drops of Shimmer had fallen.

The wild animals and critters had fled the area or went into hiding, often you would be met with a pair of glowing yellow eyes, staring at you from beneath a small rock formation, or from under the roots of a tree, wearily watching you as you passed through the forest.

Even for Nifelheim, you got the sense that this level of destruction was not typical. As you gave one last look behind you, to the small forest clearing where the cottage once stood, Ursula gently placed a hand on Circi's shoulder, unsure what to say.

Time passed and the weather grew colder. It seems the planet was entering its full season of winter. The sky became covered with a thick layer of white clouds, that stretched all the way to the horizon, blocking the sun from view and turning it into little more than a yellow, dim smear, faintly shining through the cover of clouds.

On the sixth day of your journey, heavy, large snowflakes began to fall from the sky. Some as big as a thumb, they lazily danced in the wind, without a care in the world and slowly found rest on the branches of trees, of the forest around you. The snowfall was gentle and gradual, but once it began, it hadn't spotted.

The next day, when you slowly climbed out of your tent, stretching and looking up at the white cover of clouds, you gradually noticed a decrease in the groups numbers.

The two silent merchants had disappeared overnight. Their leave was quiet and seamless, so much that not even a sign of their tracks had remained. The never ending snowfall had slowly settled the ground, covering the trace of their footprints.

No one had heard them leave and they hadn't spoken to anyone prior. Upon Kaylee's weary request, the party took inventory to see if any items had gone missing.

They weren't. Even the two strange pyramids that were found in the tomb, were both left behind in the camp. Their surface no longer glowed and now seemed like a solid, gray surface of glass.

But to Kaylee's surprise, a new item had appeared in the camp, left in plain sight to be seen.
A single empty jar, sat half buried in snow, its lid already covered with a thick layer of snowflakes.

On the jar was a note, written in hasty Nifelheim letters:

"The jar you wished to buy earlier.
For you.
Sorry.
No hard feelings.
"

- Two people from Nifelheim.

Johan slightly nodded, then looked around: "Any sing of the convoy?"

"Nn....no, not yet" Kaylee called, flying up above the tree line and looking across the forest: "I can see the swamp though, the trees are a bit different there. We'll probably reach it by dusk"

"Alright" Ursula nodded: "Hopefully we'll catch up to them within a day or two."
She stretched her hands, then all four of her giant wings, nearly knocking off one of the tents with one wing:

"Right. Lets head out.

Oh, just in case it takes longer, is everyone studying the same skills this next week?"

"Well getting out voted is better than not even getting a say. And, put me down for some martial arts training for the next set" Radiance answers "Also, I have a question about preparing spells for later casting. Would it be possible to prepare the pentagram on a rug then roll it up and carry it around?"

"Oh wow... I'm not sure" Ursula looked at the ground in surprise and became consumed in thought:

"...lets see, as long as the laws of magic are followed, the pentagram will work.
The laws state, the pentagram should be placed on a solid surface, a rug is fine, we can paint over it with a brush or something.

Next, the pentagrams drawing cannot be erased or broken, otherwise the spell may not activate.
But if we roll up the carpet, I don't think it the pentagrams drawing will be erased necessarily, short of the paint not being dry and getting smeared all over the place.

Yeah... yeah I think it can work. Higher level spells require larger pentagrams but if we get a big enough rug, I think a 2, maybe even a 3 level spell could fit on it"

Kaylee grimaced: "..you really wonna haul a giant rug for weeks with you everywhere?"

"Wuehehe.. maybe if we had a Hadedashi.." Ursula said: "We could fasten it to its back. Orrrr maybe we can get a small rug and just fit a level 2 spell on it. Take turns carrying it around?"

Kaylee sunk her head into her shoulders and grimaced.

"Alrighty, lets not burn daylight" Johan energetically called, rolling up his tent and gathering the cooking pot from the campfire. Soon you were once again packed and on the road again.

And the snow continued to fall. The blue colored snowflakes danced in the wind, sparking and shining in sunlight, until they finally found rest on your weary shoulders. The forest slowly covered itself in a blanket of blue, the snow weighing heavily on its branches.

As you made your way through the increasingly growing snowdrifts, they sparkled under your feet, as if millions of tiny diamonds were scattered everywhere through the forest.

When you finally crossed the threshold of the swamp, the snowdrifts began to grow shorter, giving way to a bright orange glow, emanating in long streaks from the ground. The Fire Veins, naturally formed in this area, lazily leaking from under the earth and running in tiny streams down the snow.

They covered everything. And amidst the sparking, snow covered tree branches, the soothing orange glow from below painted a breathtaking picture, the wild, gentle beauty of nature, left undisturbed by man.

One day passed, then another, and other, as you ventured deeper and deeper into the swamp. The trees began growing thinner with pines, more withered, more ancient. Their black tree bark just barely reflecting the orange glow from below.

It was quiet here, peaceful and yet, the feeling of unease began to creep up on you more, every day. The convoy was nowhere in sight. Not even the faint traces of its passing remained. No footprints of dozens of people, not paw prints of foxes or their shedding blue fur. No long lines of carriage wheels left on the snow. There was nothing.

Ursula spent more and more time each day, staring in grim silence at the map the convoy leader provided her. Checking and rechecking the planned travel path, over and over again. And the more she tried to stick to the map, the more you grew convinced that the convoy didn't travel this path.

No tracks, no litter, no old campfires found. Only the undisturbed nature of Nifelheim. And snowfall, coated in silence.

When the second week came to pass from the start of the journey and you set up camp, under the rare, clear sight of the moon and the partially clear night sky, Ursula once against silently sat by the campfire and opened her map, without speaking to anyone. She did that more and more often now, just silently stare at the map, trying to calculate and re-check the navigation path, over and over again.

"...this isn't healthy" Johan quietly whispered to you, as he looked at her: "..she barely spoke two words to me during the week... the chase after the convoy is consuming her, to the exclusion of everything else.
And the less signs we find of its passing, the worse it becomes. We should.. speak with her.

Something is wrong, we should've ran into the convoy days ago. But we can't even find signs of its passing.."
